In this article, the Board of SASS interviews Fundamentals of Expository Writing (JE001) peer tutor Hannah Bowman. We hope that this article will help current and future Fundamentals of Expository Writing (JE001) students in their academic journey!
When did you take this course?
I took it during the 2019-2020 school year.
What did you enjoy about Fundamentals of Expository Writing (JE001)?
It really helped me develop my writing skills. We also did a lot of interesting readings and discussions.
What challenged you the most in Fundamentals of Expository Writing (JE001)? How did you overcome those challenges?
I had to spend a lot of time on the writing assignments and Mrs. Stanford is a pretty tough grader. It was really helpful to have a weekly tutoring appointment with a writing instructor in the WTC. I also made sure to incorporate Mrs. Stanford’s feedback in my writing.
What tips do you have that could be useful to students taking Fundamentals of Expository Writing (JE001)?
Do the readings and participate in class. Go to office hours and email your teacher if you have questions or want to talk about your ideas. Remember to use MLA format and to color code. Join the writing lab if you can. Use the WTC (Mrs. Stanford prefers that you use the same writing instructor). Not only will working with a writing instructor or peer tutor improve your writing, it will also show that you are putting effort into your assignments. Really try to apply your teacher’s feedback to your writing. Participate in class to show that you understand the material and to help you get a better grasp of the reading in order to more easily write your essays.
About how much time did you spend a week working on assignments and preparing for discussion sessions in Fundamentals of Expository Writing (JE001)?
I'd say about 4 hours on the writing and an hour on the reading/preparing for discussion sessions.
What did the typical week in Fundamentals of Expository Writing (JE001) look like?
I started writing on the weekend and had tutoring appointments on Thursdays (and Monday or Tuesday if it was an FWA). I also started the readings early.
What was your favorite topic covered in Fundamentals of Expository Writing (JE001)?
Either the Canterbury Tales by Chaucer or Hamlet by Shakespeare.
